Thanks Sailor. I might have already asked you what your connection with the USMC is. I'm a USMC veteran.

Hi, I'm a Deutscher-Amerikaner who lived at Haus Hoheneck in the early 1960s before being taken to the USA by my German mother. I can speak, read and understand German but write better in English. If you would like to communicate with me, I would be very happy to do so. Sincerely Gerd-Ralph Naydock

Update: I am in contact with the LVR people at the Landeskrankenhaus Bedburg-Hau who have five files containing 200 documents each on my mother. I've sent them documents to prove that I am her son and they have agreed to search documents for the possibility that they might contain the names and locations of the Kinderheims in which I was placed. I'm guessing that this is my last opportunity to know anything. Hope everyone is on this forum is doing well. Gerd

Thank you to both Martin and Burkhard! I just sent an email to the contact person at Bedburg-Hau which was provided by Peter Moeller at LVR. I will see if there is anything useful in my mother's medical records. I will be certain to keep you updated on here. Many thanks again for all of your assistance and support in this matter. I'm very appreciative! Sincerely, Gerd

Dear Martin, I have heard back from LVR and it appears that I am now on what we call "a wild goose chase". Once sends me to the other - "passing the buck" which is typical in most bureaucratic structures. Here is LVR's response to my outreach: Dear Mr Naydock, in the 1960s there was in Germany a large number of baby and children's homes, the majority of which no longer exists. The data available to these facilities is poor. Often there are hardly any more information and personal files are usua…

4726-ansichtskarte-postkarte-neuss-rhein-strasse-am-kreis-waisenhaus Martin, You are a treasure of much information. I found this link of what looks like the old St. Anna Heim in Neuss. I'm not sure whether or not this building was still standing in 1960s. The one that is shown in Wikipedia looks much too modern for the times. It is possible. akpool.de/ansichtskarten/4726-…rasse-am-kreis-waisenhaus

Hello Martin, I received the following response from the Jugendamt in Essen. Unfortunately, it's not very encouraging. Actually I am not really interested in getting compensation at all, just have a desire to know a little more about my history. Do they really destroy records after 30 years? I find that amazing. Any advice? Thanks!

Dear Martini, . It looks as though you have done a bit of research. Thank you for taking the time. I simply don't know how to obtain records in Germany. To answer your questions, my German Certificate of Birth indicates that I was born as Gerd-Ralph Naydock on June 28, 1960 at St. Elisabeth Krankenhaus in Essen. My mother's name was Gerda Ilse Naydock, geboren Koepke. Since my mother had severe mental illness, I spent most of the years between 1960 and 1965 in these Kinderheimen. So since birth …

Hello everyone, Obviously I don't get on here very often. I contacted the authorities in Germany and they can tell me nothing based on the records. Interestingly enough, they are still offering me up to 10,000 Euros which I might use to come over and do some research. It is possible that I was living at Waisenhaus Schloss Schellenberg, Essen-Rellinghausen or the Franz Sales Haus in Essen. I simply don't know and they are having difficulty finding records. In any case, I'm now Herr Dr. Naydock. N…

Thanks to everyone for their kind responses. I'm sorry that I haven't been able to respond sooner as I've been extremely busy finishing up my doctoral degree plus working. I plan to visit Germany either late summer or early autumn. I truly wish I knew the names of the orphanages in which I was placed in the early 1960s. I'm positive that they were run by the Catholic church. Who can forget those nuns? I'm also guessing that they were located not far from Essen. I hope that everyone is doing well…

Hello, I am a German-American who was born in Essen and have lived in the United States since 1965. Prior to coming to America, I lived in a number of orphanages in Germany on account that my mother was unable to care for me since she suffered from schizophrenia. She spent the last 26 years of her life living at the Rheinisches Landeskrankenhaus, Bedburg-Hau, dying there in 2000. I have a lot of memories, most not so good, of my days living in the orphanages and share very similar experiences to…
